Holding of the International Oyster Symposium (IOS)

The 8th International Oyster Symposium (IOS8)

The 8th International Oyster Symposium was held on November 5-8, 2019, in Qingdao and Rushan, Shandong Province, China, jointly with the Ocean University of China. On November 6th and 7th, 2019, about 300 participants gathered at the venue (Qingdao Huanghai Hotel) .

The theme was “Sustainable development of oyster production on a global scale”, the same as the previous one. 38 oral presentations (including 8 keynotes) and 12 poster presentations were given in two days which covered various areas of oyster research, including genetic breeding, aquaculture, immunology and diseases, physiology and microalgae culture.

On November 7th, WOS President Katsuyoshi Mori announced three Chinese recipients of the WOS Early-Stage Investigator Award. The judges commented that the content of the presentation was extremely high.

On the last day of the 8th, about 100 people participated in a tour of the oyster industry in China’s largest oyster production area, that is, world’s largest oyster production area. There was full cooperation of Rushan City aiming at further development and internationalization of the oyster industry.

At the WOS Steering Committee meeting held during the IOS8, it was decided that the next IOS9 will be held in Japan in 2021.

The 7th International Oyster Symposium (IOS7)

The 7th International Oyster Symposium was held at The University of Bangor in Wales, United Kingdom, on 11- 14, September 2017. About 120 participants form 17 nations attended IOS7. 

Under the theme “Sustainable expansion of global oyster production”, 8 important issues facing the oyster industry were set as session themes and Keynote Speeches by 3 researchers, 37 oral presentations and 9 poster presentations were given. The public lecture by two university professors was also given.

Three people were selected for the usual “Early Stage Investigator Award”. Prof. Katsuyoshi Mori, president of the WOS presented a certificate and a souvenir to them.

The participant party (Oyster Celebration) was held in the old castle (Chateau Rhianfa) overlooking the Menai Strait. There was an excursion on the Menai Strait Cruise on the mussels dredger on the final day afternoon.

The WOS Steering Committee meeting, which was held on the first day of the session, decided to hold the next symposium in Qingdao, China in 2019 and also Dr. Keisuke Takahashi (Associate Professor, Graduate School of Agricultural Science, Tohoku University),the WOS Steering Committee member was approved as the vice-president of the WOS. 

The 6th International Oyster Symposium (IOS6)

The 6th International Oyster Symposium (IOS6) was held on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, on October 21-23, 2015, with the theme, “Let the Sea Live. Let us Live with the Sea.”. This symposium took place at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole and at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

In the three-day symposium, people from 6 continents and 20 USA states participated in workshops, round-table discussions, trade show and a tour of Cape Cod oyster farms, etc. There were 3 Keynote Speeches (Mr. Barton Seaver, Mr. Bill Taylor and Dr. Margaret Davidson from USA), over 60 oral presentations and 9 posters. Approximately 350 people attended IOS6.
The below is the prizewinners of Student/Young Investigator Award. 

First Prize winner: Ms. Kazuyo Fukushima, Watanabe Oyster Laboratory Co., Ltd. Japan
“A Novel Antioxidant E6 Extracted from soft body of Crassostrea gigas: its Lipid Antioxidant effects in the brain”

Second Prize winner: Dr. Austin Humphries, US Environmental Protection Agency
“The role of oyster restoration and aquaculture in Nutrient cycling within a Rhode Island estuary”

During the symposium, we held a featured evening event, “Oyster Grand Tasting (OGT)”. Approximately 400 attendees enjoyed original oyster dishes provided by chefs from Japan and USA.

The IOS6 was held in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the WOS. At the closing ceremony, Prof. Katsuyoshi Mori, WOS President, expressed gratitude to Dr. Rene Lavoie who drafted the vision, mission and objectives of WOS and gave a plaque to him. 

The 5th International Oyster Symposium (IOS5)

The 5th International Oyster Symposium (IOS5) was held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on December 10-13, 2013. This symposium was organized jointly with Asian Pacific Aquaculture 2013 (APA13) run by the Asian Pacific Chapter of the World Aquaculture Society (APC-WAS). 

At the first WOS Steering Committee after the new organization control, the Directors of 5 chapters announced their own plans of the future activity based on “Policy and Planning for Chapter Management”. 
In addition, it was decided that the next IOS5 will be held in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, in 2015.

During the IOS5 session held on December 12-13, 31 oral presentations including 4 Keynote Speeches and 24 poster presentations were given.

The 4th International Oyster Symposium

IOS4 was held in conjunction with shellfish futures 2011, the annual Tasmanian oyster industry conference, at the Hobart Function and Conference Centre, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia, on September 15-18, 2011. About 200 delegates from 15 countries attended IOS4 and there were 7 Keynote Speeches, 29 oral presentations and 30 poster presentations relating to the theme of IOS4, “Embracing the Future through Innovation”. Regarding poster presentations, WOS awarded 3 young researchers best poster prizes.

BRONZE PRIZE winner:Mr. Yusuke Iidzuka, Coastal Lagoon Research Center, Shimane University, Japan

The 3rd International Oyster Symposium

IOS3 was cosponsored by WOS, Fisheries Research Institute, Council of Agriculture, Taiwan, National Taiwan Ocean University, Taiwan and Food & Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region, Taiwan, at Taipei, Taiwan. 153 delegates from 11 countries participated in this symposium.

Under the theme, “Recent Advances, Potentials, Challenges and Problems in Oyster Industry”, 15 oral presentations and 16 poster presentations were also given in addition to Keynote Speeches by 5 researchers from Taiwan, America, Australia and Japan.

The 2nd International Oyster Symposium

IOS2 was cosponsored by WOS and Zhejiang University from November 26-29th,2007, at Hangzhou,Zhejiang Province, China.
125 oyster people from 11countries participated in this symposium, where the opening ceremony, keynote address, oral presentations and poster viewing were given actively.
Consequently, IOS2 was highly evaluated because it accomplished a major role as a precious place for active discussion and exchange of pieces of information, friendship etc.
